Welcome to Newman Theological College's Facebook page!
NTC was founded in 1969 in the wake of the Second Vatican Council by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Edmonton, Alberta. NTC grew out of the existing structure of St. Joseph Seminary which had already opened its doors in 1967 to lay people and religious for the study of theology. NTC is a free-standing, Catholic academic institution dedicated to the study of theology and related disciplines. Its charter to confer degrees was originally granted by the Legislative Assembly of Alberta on April 29, 1969. NTC has been an accredited member of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in the United States and Canada since 1992.
NTC carries out its mission for the Church in an ongoing partnership with St. Joseph Seminary whose particular mission is the human, spiritual and pastoral formation of future diocesan priests. Both institutions remain distinct, interdependent, and complementary. Lay men and women, diocesan clergy from Western Canada, along with several religious orders of men and consecrated women work together to fulfill the mission of NTC. In this way, NTC is infused with the life-giving collaboration of all members of the Body of Christ that is the beauty and grace of the Church.
Newman Theological College fulfills this mission through theological education in the following ways:
- Programs that prepare students for professional and volunteer ministry in the Church, notably the Master of Divinity degree.
- Provision for academic study of theology through programs at undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Special attention to the needs of the Catholic educational community through programs such as the Master of Religious Education program and the Graduate Certificate in Catholic School Administration.
For Newman Theological College a natural consequence of our academic study of theology is the desire to make theological education and faith formation available to all through participation in the New Evangelization. This occurs through the college’s Benedict XVI Institute for New Evangelization. The Institute provides:
- Certificate in Catholic Studies: short and affordable online courses and certificates in many areas of theology.
- An annual enculturation program for International priests.
- Treasures of Our Faith: Free seminars with college faculty on various issues of theology and faith.
- Vocatus: A community of business leaders who gather to foster reflection on faith and vocation.
- Aboriginal Spirituality and Ministry: Sponsors seminars that support reflection upon aboriginal spirituality and ministry in relation to the Catholic faith.
